long line at the drive thru, so i pulled into a stall ... wanted to use my gift card but i happened to choose the only place where the card machine had died.

"i wanted to pay with my card, but your machine is sick."
she gets a look on her face like you were talking about an ailing niece and
pats the device on the side. pausing, she speaks softly so as not to disturb the patient, "i know! it's been like this for three days."
"maybe it's just resting?"
"maybe. it works very hard."
my tip was more than my tab.
