happy hour

medium lime slush with extra lime. lake mead SONIC.

the slush was 65¢. they charged me 20¢ *twice* for my request of "extra lime wedges."

of course i call the 800 number as soon as i get home ... long, funny,
call with the SONIC rep that included, at one point, my yelling into the
phone:

"AND IF I GET IN FRONT OF A GRAND JURY I'LL SAY THAT KRISTIN FROM ATLANTA SAID THIS SITUATION IS 'NOT AT ALL RIGHT!'"

i think she was laughing hard enough that she was crying and eventually following up with, "you made my day" ... she even went so far as to imply (but not say) that the whole situation may have been worth the extra 20 cents.

happy hour

this is what extra lime is about
medium limeade with extra lime. sahara SONIC.

long line at the drive thru, so i pulled into a stall ... wanted to use my gift card but i happened to choose the only place where the card machine had died.

in a 4-digit ZIP code world, there are no problems
friendly carhop brings out my drinks.

"i wanted to pay with my card, but your machine is sick."

she gets a look on her face like you were talking about an ailing niece and
pats the device on the side.  pausing, she speaks softly so as not to disturb the patient, "i know! it's been like this for three days."

"maybe it's just resting?"

"maybe. it works very hard."

my tip was more than my tab.

SONIC is (and will be) watching me eat

on the 18th of march, i awoke to find this in my versatran mailbox:

Hey there,

We've been following your blog and we wanted to reach out and say hi! As a token of our appreciation for your being such a big SONIC fan, we'd like to send you a My SONIC gift card. Just reply with your address and we'll get one right out to you.

i pass the news around.  it's funny how a simple email can generate a firestorm of discussion ... especially if you have friends who aren't focused enough on their day jobs.

my e-commerce pal replied in one sentence, in that loving and touching way she's so famous for, "they got off cheap."  special K went into full-on 'net stalker mode, giving me running TXT updates on information he was discovering about the sender.

anyone and everyone i talked to, the first question they asked was, "how much?"

as if that even matters.

part of the reason i wanted to start superbSONIC was to see if anything would come out of it ... i mean, if i'm gonna be stopping there all the time i might as well document it and see what happens ... it's not that much work.

i figured that one of these days i'd get some sort of freebie out of the mothership ... you know, a t-shirt, a hat, food, something ... i just didn't expect for it to happen so quickly ... i mean, come on, 47 SONIC stops in two-and-a-half months isn't that many, right?

okay, well, it is kind of a lot.  and yes, writing this 'blog DOES make me go to SONIC more often ... but don't change the subject.

i just got off the phone with the author of that email (incredibly nice woman -- especially considering the fact that she was being forced to talk to a rambling freak on the other end).  we had a nice conversation where i'd say all kinds of crazy things and when i'd hand the discussion over to her she'd pause (probably trying to figure out if there was a way i might be able to pull a gun on the phone), then come up with the smallest number of syllables she could utter before i'd ramble some more.

in 15 minutes we covered all sorts of bases ranging from the unemployment rates of a major midwest cities to the fact that i believe american cheese is crap ... but in summary, yes, a SONIC gift card is coming my way!  (something i claim is good, pure, karmic retribution for the 20 bucks i shelled out to special K.)

in addition to feeding my happy hour fixations, i'm going to use that card specifically to delve deeper into the menu ... there's a bunch of stuff on there i've never had that i'm gonna try.  it will be fun, fun, fun.

very early out-of-the-gate i'm gonna get a fruit smoothie (and shortly after that, a grilled chicken salad ... looks really promising) ... but it's going to take a fair amount of planning as i wander through the display board ... there are land mines everywhere on there ... i been eating 1500 calories a day for several months, and the smallest smoothie is 500 calories.

i'm also going to jack up the amount of time i use this 'blog as an open communications channel to SONIC.  you guys are reading it?  great.  i've got some stuff to say if i'm going to bend you to my wishes.  one thing i'm absolutely certain of is SONIC is the most responsive of the nationwide food chains.  they actually kind of "get" the needs and wants of the larger american public -- as much as any corporate monstrosity ever does.

what?  you don't believe it?  okay, when has mcdonald's, burger king or taco bell ever sent you a gift card?  oh that's right, they haven't.  (but maybe, just maybe, it's because you never got up off your lazy hypothetical ass and actually made a 'blog to the target of your obsession.)

but SONIC's monetary subsidy of my caloric intake won't make what i write here any less (or more) bratty ... it also won't start me using a caps key ... the only real change is it makes me somewhat less likely to dumpster dive the sahara SONIC looking for survey receipts.

to show my gratitude (and for personal statistical reasons) in future posts i'll be using the tag "thanks SONIC" whenever i use a gift card.

i would write more, but i've got to go chow on some mozzarella stix, as well as run a few intervals before my wacky pack tonight.

oh, and by the way ...

thanks, SONIC!

... i mean that sincerely.

(your current PR reps are very good.)

hot fudge sundae 'n' route 44 iced tea

flamingo SONIC.

and my last stop today ... nevertheless, it's my first triple since starting this 'blog (but not even my first triple ice cream of the year ... SONIC had 11c cones on new year's day ... i had three then).

come on, at least they ARE brown

One morning a few years ago I was driving by the South Plano Sonic at 108th & Memorial and their sign was flashing 'Now serving breakfast!'. I was hungry so I pulled in and ordered their pancake battered sausage and hash brown bites combo. It sounded kind of good and was a departure from McDonald's or Burger King, although there was no picture on the order board.

They brought me a corn dog and tator tots.

st. valentine's day taste bud massacre

stopped by the gilroy SONIC on my way to monterey and decided to take advantage of their TXT offer. i pull to the drive thru knowing full-well that things could go wrong ... and they do, almost immediately.

i order a route 44 strawberry slush (using a survey receipt) and a medium red velvet cheesecake blast (using the TXT discount).

the speaker chirps, "that'll be $3.59."

no it won't.

i pull up to the window. the girlie says, "that'll be $3.59."

"no. i have this receipt and <lifting my hiptop> this text message."

i hand her a dollar.

she slides the window closed and i hear a LOT of yelling back-and-forth. i don't get everything but there are lots of "we're not accepting that!" "where's that from!" and so forth.

the window slides open. "we can only accept that blast coupon if it's printed."

"no, it says you'll accept it right here," and i hand her my phone.

back and forth this goes. my phone leaves my car and goes through the pass-through window, not once but three times. i'm answering a myriad of questions, all of which are vaguely in tune with "where the hell did
you get this?" or "how the hell can we get you to leave the window right now?

minutes pass. many minutes. maybe as many as ten.

so many minutes pass that the staff begin servicing cars behind me in line by sending people
out.

two different cars simply drive away.

the closest thing to a manager comes to the window.

"we have no idea what this text is, but we'll give you a blast for one-third off."

that's right. this situation has gotten enough out of hand that i'm now *bartering* with an american fast food restaurant.

"how much would that be?"

the officianado hacks on his register for 45 seconds.

"$1.89."

normally i'd say, "just give me the slush" and berate the 800 number later, but i've been wanting to try this monstrosity after seeing the ads pushed in my face repeatedly for the last few weeks. and a discount
is a discount. the endless stream of cars driving past me certainly aren't getting this deal.

"i'll take it."

so i get my slush and my red velvet cheesecake blast and i drive off into the garlic smell filled night.

the slush is exactly what you'd expect.

great.

i figured the red velvet cheesecake blast could be anywhere on the map from surprisingly good to predictably henious ... i mean, come on, it's "rich red velvet cake batter real ice cream blended with cheesecake pieces, then finished with whipped topping† and more cheesecake pieces."‡ so it has a chance, right?

it was indescribably awful. i mean, awful in that grab-a-popsicle-stick-and-scrape-it-off-my-tongue-PLEASE! way.

so bad that i:
  • ate a bite.
  • thought it was beyond horrible.
  • sat there.
  • thought "it can't be that bad."
  • sat there some more.
  • ate another bite.
  • and then actually exclaimed, "aw, gawd! this is so bad it makes me really really sorry i don't litter!"
as my l-o-n-g string of girlfriends will be oh-so-quick to tell you, i don't celebrate valentine's day. but i also don't go out and try to torture myself either. this whole thing would be a horrible, horrible, bad event ... except ...

i got a survey receipt.

and as long as i didn't chuck that flimsy piece of paper from the car as i was spewing red velvet glory out of my mouth and onto the highway shoulder, THIS one is gonna count ...

... and the 800 number is gonna hear about it. oh yes, they are.

†the phrase "whipped topping" always makes me wince ever since i took hardcore cooking classes. is it *really* that hard to whip cream?

‡doesn't this sound suspiciously like the recipe for the "squealer spoonbender" that the birdhead sent me: chocolate custard, chocolate chips and bacon; topped with whipped cream and more bacon?

happy hour

medium lemon-berry slush, SONIC #5517

just BARELY made it. after hustling to the drive thru of the SONIC on
the way to my spa, there was a car full of degenerates ordering with
multiple windows down in front of me. and it's 4:58 PM.

with happy hour ending at 5:00, i back through the drive-thru and pull
into a stall. i'm not a fan of the stalls because i am then sociologically obligated
to tip -- eating into my precious 50% discount. but GODDAMMIT ...

"welcome to SONIC, how may i help you?"

"is it still happy hour?"

not really an answer to the question i was asked, but that hasn't seemed to bother nearly all the people i've asked questions to in the past month ... so i'll just go with that answer .... AND ANYWAY, PRESSING ISSUES ARE AT HAND.

long pause. if she pauses any longer, it won't be happy hour any more.

"yes."

SUDDENLY THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD LIFTS FROM MY SHOULDERS.

1/16/2011

happy hour (and anomaly)

medium lemon-berry slush; don't know the store number (it's not on the
receipt) but it's the one on nellis

i make my order and the server says, "$1.02." alarm bells ring in my
head ... i've ordered this drink 1,000 times in NV during happy hour ...
it's *always* 91 cents.

i ask for the receipt, and sure enough, someone like the instigator is
doing the math programming here. half price on $1.69 should be 85
cents, not 75. AND it kicks me up into the next tax bracket.

i call the manager on the receipt, "roberto la madrid." as with *every*
SONIC manager i've ever spoken to, he's very cordial, apologizes for the
mistake and asks me to bring the receipt back in the future for a
freebie.

thank you, roberto. thanks, SONIC!

car hopping

two nights ago i was in the rio spa, talking to an attendant there.

"what're you up to tonight, b1?"

"after my steam, i'm goin' to SONIC.  it's wacky pack wednesday!"

"that's funny.  you know i used to car hop at SONIC ..."

"really?  what was it like?"

up to this point, it was a normal conversation ... but this was the turning point where the attendant became very animated.  "oh, it was a great job.  i loved it.  the only problem was they used old time four wheel box skates with the brake on the toe ... and i was used to inlines with a brake on the back ... it made it almost impossible for me to stop ... during happy hour, you might have a tray full of route 44s ... that thing was heavy."

"did you ever drop one?"

"no, i came close, but never did ... what  was common, though, was for me to go crashing into a car i was skating up to ... not that that was all bad ... in fact i learned really fast that whenever you did that, people would tip you five bucks.

"i'd slam into a car -WHAM!- and the driver was always, like, 'honey, are you okay?' and tip me a five dollar bill ... especially the women ... you see a woman with a car full of kids?  that's five bucks waiting to happen."
